Welcome to issue #36!
Food can seem like such a simple thing, but our relationship to it can drastically differ from one person to the next. Food can be a site for building community, as we often gather around a good meal with family and friends to celebrate. Food can be a way of honoring our history and culture by passing down a recipe for generations. Food can create joy by awakening our senses or can cause struggle with the power it has over us.
In this issue, we explore the topic of food and deliciousness through the eyes of seven artists. I spoke with life coach, artist and designer Jessica Dance, who creates miniature food out of wool. Alicia Puig chats with Elisa Sheehan about her abstract and minimalist work made by painting on eggshells. Ekaterina Popova interviews Dave Pollot, who paints junk food onto found thrift store paintings, fusing together classical and pop styles.
We also take a look at delicious, realistic-looking desserts that are actually sculptural pieces of art made from a variety of materials, created by artists like Angela Wells, Peter Anton and Catherine McMillian. And last but not least, artist CJ Hendry tells us about her luscious hyperrealistic drawings. Whether focusing on the seductive visual qualities of sweets or the role food has in our lives, these artists create irresistible works that are sure to satisfy your taste buds!
In the glossy pages of our curated section, you’ll find selected works by artists from all over the world, curated by the multi-talented Danielle Krysa. Also known as The Jealous Curator, Danielle is an artist, writer, blogger, podcaster, curator and author of several books, including “A Big Important Art Book – Now with Women.”
So grab your favorite snack, crack open the magazine and explore the diverse, inspiring, and refreshing artists featured in The Food Issue!
With love,
